Our HistoryAfter over 150 years of customer service, our history is very important to us.
Over 150 Years Ago:
The earliest recoverable traces of the Stone Agency are found in a contract with Middlesex Mutual Assurance in Middletown, CT back to 1858. Our agency code with this company is #59 which probably indicates that we were the 59th agency to be appointed with the company. This means The Stone Agency has had a contract with Middlesex Mutual Assurance for 145 years!
Early 20th Century:
Transaction records of The Stone Agency by the Stone family have been found going back to 1915. The record book covers the years 1915 to 1937. This book is interesting reading as it shows claims information for typical losses during this time period. Lightning, chimney and candle fires were common. The payments on these claims averaged about $25. In 1923 a Dodge was stolen and the insured was paid $150 for his stolen car. Back in 1930 there was a claim where an auto hit a boy on a bike. The payout was $35.
1950’s to 1970’s:
The Stone Agency was owned and operated by the Stone family. The agency was located on the Green in Guilford and served the greater Guilford community. In 1971 the business moved to its new location (a converted gas station building) at 35 Boston Street, Guilford. Three generations of the Stone Family were present at the grand opening: Grandfather Elliot W. Stone, Father Charles Merrill Stone, and the then 24 year old son, Leverett C. Stone. The agency continued to be a family run business until 1987, when the first non-family member became a partner. In the 1980’s the biggest change at insurance agencies was automation through digital computing.
The present day and changing with the Times:
The challenge in the 1990’s was to make the transition from a family run business to a corporate run business. This necessitated planning, formalizing procedures, making staff assessments and making another major automation upgrade. In this time period, a Commercial Lines Sales Manager and a Personal Lines Sales Manager were recruited. The Commercial Lines position was held by Robert J. Oman, CPCU and the Personal Lines by Douglas F. Danaher, CIC. Both were employed by a very large agency in New Haven and they brought “bigger thinking” to the community based Stone Agency.
Today, Robert and Doug are [co-presidents?] and partners of the Agency. We continue to grow and improve and we remain an independent insurance agency. We are meeting the challenges of being a small business when most small businesses have been forced to sell, merge and consolidate. There are certain things that change with time, like the cost of a fire policy, or the size of a claim settlement, but there are also things that have stayed the same. For us, that is service to the Greater New Haven and Shoreline communities as an independent agency for over 150 years.
